This stoneware bowl was thrown on a potter’s wheel and then incised with a process called sgraffito and inlaid with manganese oxide .
The shape of the bowl is based on a traditional Malaysian cooking pot. The flange provided an easy grip for removal from the fire. The repeated incised designs come from these pots (and indeed are found all over the world).
