This stoneware bowl was thrown on a potter’s wheel and then incised with a process called sgraffito and inlaid with manganese oxide . These patterns originated from two sources that I noticed while living in the Far East. The first was the graceful swirls of Arabic writing, the second was from looking down on the contours created by narrow rice terraces snaking round the hilltops of Bali. Capacity 1 litre approx.
Dropped knit piece by my daughter Esther Miles with similar patterns, using a contrasting source – knitting – which she developed doing a fashion degree, and now has morphed into a million intertwined painted paper rows with those inevitable dropped stitches.
